If you’re in the market for a used pickup truck, you’ve got a lot of options to consider. From the Chevrolet Silverado, the most dependable and longest-lasting full-sized pickup truck on the road, to the dearly departed Avalanche, there’s no shortage of styles and options and configurations out there.* But what you buy should depend on what you really need. Here’s what to look for when buying a used pickup truck.
Commercial or Personal Use
As with any vehicle, before you buy, you need to have a good idea of what your needs are. Pickup trucks come in a variety of trims and models, from luxury to rugged workhorses. If you’re an entrepreneur who needs a truck for commercial use, it is extra important that you have a mechanic check each pickup truck you’re considering before you buy to ensure that your truck will be up for whatever job you have in mind for it.
Towing and Hauling
Towing and hauling is one of the, if not the most, desired abilities a pickup truck offers. Whether you plan to occasionally help your friends move or haul cargo and trailers regularly, looking into the towing capacities of the make and model you’re looking at before you buy it is a good idea. If the previous owner towed often, have the truck inspected for wear and tear.
Check if a used truck has been driven off-road by looking underneath the truck. The suspension, chassis, and other mechanical parts will showcase additional wear and tear beyond what seems usual. This may indicate wear-and-tear that should be checked by a pro, but it may just mean the truck was used on a farm or otherwise off-road to do work.
