The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has generated a lot of hype since its unveiling, and it looks like this full-size truck isn’t done surprising just yet. Chevrolet recently announced that the upcoming 2019 Silverado 1500 will feature a new turbocharged engine.
The new turbocharged four-cylinder engine will replace the base V6 engine in some 2019 Silverado 1500 models. The engine will feature active cylinder management that shuts down half the cylinders when they aren’t needed. That means this truck will run on just two cylinders, a factor that will likely play a major role in boosting the truck’s efficiency.
The 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine will be the first in a full-size truck. It will replace the V6 engine in LT and RST trim levels. In addition to shaving more than 300 pounds off the Silverado 1500 pickup, the engine also offers more torque than competing V6 powertrains.
The Chevrolet Silverado 1500’s turbocharged powertrain will produce 310 horsepower and 348 lb-ft of torque. The manufacturer claims the engine will boast a 0-to-60 mph time of less than seven seconds and towing capabilities on par with competing trucks loaded with V6 engines.
The turbocharged engine is the latest step in Chevrolet’s drive to increase fuel economy in its full-size truck. A turbodiesel inline six-cylinder engine is likely to join the Silverado 1500 range by the next model year.
